Time to pack your bags and begin your au pair adventure — with full support before, during, and after your stay.

What is an Au pair?

As an au pair, you help care for your host family's children and support them with light household tasks. In return, you’ll get:

- Free accommodation
- Free meals
- Weekly spending money

Beyond your daily duties, you’ll get to explore a new country, meet people from around the world, and try things you’ve never done before.

More than just a trip

Being an au pair isn’t like going on vacation. You’ll stay for 6 to 24 months (depending on your choice and destination), become part of a local family, and really experience everyday life in a new culture.
You'll speak the local language every day and quickly become more fluent. Over time, you’ll see what life is really like “behind the scenes”.

Time for personal travel

Even though you're working as an au pair, there's still time for adventure. Use your free weekends, holidays, or your travel month at the end of the program to explore even more!

A lot of our team and local reps have been au pairs themselves, so they really get what it’s like — both the good and the challenging parts.

We’ll help you prepare, guide you through your application, and assist you in finding a host family that suits you.

🗽Going to the USA?

We work closely with our AuPairCare colleagues in San Francisco, so your whole au pair experience there is managed together from start to finish.

You have questions, we have answers:

  • Finding a host family that fits you well is more important than selecting a specific location. Most families live in suburbs of larger cities. Be open to any region, and you can explore other parts of the country during weekends, vacation, or after your programme.

  • The timeline mainly depends on you. You could travel 2-3 months after submitting your application if all documents are ready. Completing the application quickly can take around two weeks. Apply for your passport and police clearance certificate promptly. Once your documents are ready, we schedule your interview and send your profile to host families. Placement is quicker if your application is strong and you have childcare and driving experience. Once matched, you can apply for your visa and we'll book flights. This usually takes an additional 4–5 weeks.

  • Yes. A valid driver’s licence is required for all au pair programmes. Driving children to school or activities is often part of your daily routine.

The distances from A to B in countries like the USA or Australia are usually greater than in European countries and the public transport systems are not as as good.

  • Yes. Opening a bank account in your host country is advisable. Required documents vary by country and bank, but usually include your passport, proof of address, and a social security card (for the US). We recommend saving a little each week to have a cushion for larger or unexpected expenses.
